A very early pregnancy in the uterus with a vaginal scan (4-5 weeks) will only show a small black circle. This is known as the gestational sac. At about 5-6 weeks, a tiny structure termed the fetal pole becomes visible, along with a ring-shaped structure called a yolk-sac. At 6 weeks there should be a visible fetus, yolk-sac and the visible flicker of a fetal heartbeat.

Question: Hi I had a scan at 6 weeks n 6 days. No fetal pole but yolk sac n gest sac was visible. What should I do?
Answer: In case of normal pregnancy fetal pole or fetal heart rate should be visible after 6 weeks scan. But if your perception is late or your pregnancy is weak then it may take at least two to three weeks extra to get a proper fetal heart rate in USG. So you should take proper rest, eat healthy and nutritious diet and take medicines if given by your doctor and you should take another ultrasonography after 2-3 weeks of TVS scan. Hope it helps.
Question: Hi i did a pregnancy scan 5weeks 4 days. They could see gestational sac of 16mm. No yolk sac or heartbeats observed. Is this a problem?
If you have been to Doctor for the USG at 6 weeks and only gestational sac is seen without fetal pole, there are chances that the Doctor might ask you to do an USG or Transvaginal Ultrasound after 10 days to 2 weeks as this could be able to detect the fetal pole.
Its normal in many pregnancies, dont worry do as the Doctor say.
