Question: precautions for low lying placenta reaching internal os
Low-lying placenta, or placenta praevia, is a complication of pregnancy where the placenta that feeds the growing baby is attached to the lower part of the womb near to or covering the cervix.
A low lying placenta, by itself, may not require any treatment. If it is early in your pregnancy, before the twentieth week, then there is a good chance that the placenta will shift into an upward position as your uterus expands. If the placenta stays at a low lying position but is not near enough to the cervix to be classified as placenta previa.
However there are treatments to prevent the two most common complications of a low lying placenta: bleeding and pre-term labor. To prevent these problems some women are placed on bed rest or limited activity. Especially activities that result in bouncing or jarring of the lower abdomen need to be avoided. Similarly some women need to refrain from sexual intercourse, or the use of rectal suppositories or vaginal douches/suppositories. The degree of restriction depends on whether or not the woman is experiencing any vaginal bleeding or pre-term labor.
Question: What are the risks involved in low lying placenta?
Answer: “Any major bleeding caused by the low lying placenta in the third trimester could pose a risk for both mother and baby. But mostly the bleeding is intermittent and small to moderate. “
“You must contact the hospital right away in case you experience any bleeding, contractions or pain”
If the placenta is covering the mouth of the uterus ( the cervix) from where the baby is delivered, the condition is called total placenta previa. In this case, a c section will be required. “However, there are situations when with placenta previa, the placental edge does not reach the cervix, and you could try for a normal delivery.” If you are unsure about your situation, it is better to consult a doctor about it.
Precautions 1) “It is better to avoid sexual intercourse. We would also advise bed rest if you have had bleeding.”
2) As part of your pregnancy diet, make sure you eat foods rich in iron to reduce the risk of anaemia”
“Most of all, stay positive. Don’t let worry cloud your mind and discourage yourself from enjoying your pregnancy”!!!.
