Answer: Hi dear, down syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality found in baby during ultrasound in first or second trimester of pregnancy. Mother with age above 30 are more prone to have babies with down syndrome. Down syndrome or chromosomal trisomy causes because of the presence of an extra chromosome. This alters babies total physical and mental development. Mostly their development is slower compared to a normal baby and they are partially physically and mentally retarded. Some common features of babies with down syndrome are ----- Decreased or poor muscle tone. Short neck, with excess skin at the back of the neck. Upward slanting eyes, often with a skin fold that comes out from the upper eyelid and covers the inner corner of the eye.

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder,where there is a problem in third copy of chromosome 21.this happens when the chromosome 21 in egg or sperm fail to separate during conception.the child with down syndrome would have slow growth mental and physical,and also have typical facial features.so the NT scan at 11-13 weeks can detect if the baby has high risk of down syndrome by measuring the thickness of nuchal fluid at the back of its neck.as the thickness increases,the risk also increases.unfortunately there is no cure to this,it's just that parents get to know about it at the early stage.further screening is required if there is a risk of down syndrome is observed in NT scan...
